In autumn 2023, we started a small but important project in Schneebergland: We planted seven young fruit trees on half a hectare of meadow adjacent to a mountain forest. These little trees are not only a contribution to biodiversity, but also a symbol of a sustainable and future-proof cultural landscape.
🍏 Orchard meadows - a living cultural asset
Orchards are more than just orchards. They are species-rich biotopes that are home to numerous animal and plant species. In Austria, orchards were added to the national list of intangible cultural heritage in 2023. This award recognises the centuries-old knowledge and traditions surrounding the cultivation and care of fruit trees.
The care and cultivation of the fruit trees, the harvesting, storage and processing of the fruit are at the centre of orchard cultivation. Traditional craft techniques and tools for pruning, grafting and processing are an integral part of the practice. All these techniques will not play a role for us for the time being, we will take care of the good development of the trees through regular "educational pruning"
🌱 One year later - the little trees are thriving
Now, in their second spring, they are showing progressive signs of growth. The little trees have survived the winter well and are beginning to unfurl their first leaves. It is a small miracle that shows us how a tender little plant can become a strong tree.
We dream of coming back to this beautiful spot in a few years' time for the harvest and to savour the first juice together.
However, we are not only looking forward to the first fruits, but also to the new habitats that are being created here. Birds, insects and other animals will find food and shelter here. This makes our orchard a living part of the ecosystem.

As a tree circle, we are committed to the preservation and promotion of forests and trees. With projects like this, we want to raise awareness of the importance of trees and sustainable agriculture. Every tree planted is a step towards a greener and more liveable future.
